Anadolu Efes contributes to the agricultural economy with the motto ‘Agriculture is the future’ and works for sustainable agricultural practices through R&D, innovation and capacity building activities. In 2024, the company offered a ‘Farmer Incentive Package’ of TL 93 million to farmers and contributed TL 1.3 billion to the agricultural economy. In order to make the agricultural ecosystem more resilient to the climate crisis, Anadolu Efes launched the ‘Tarladan Şişeye Onarımı Mayalamak’ programme with Anadolu Meraları and took an important step towards restorative agriculture.

Anadolu Efes, which obtains half of its raw materials from the soil, has put agriculture at the centre of its business since the day it was founded. The company, which supports the value it attaches to agriculture and soil through the projects it implements and the collaborations it realises, established the ‘Agricultural Product Development Department’ in 1982. In this context, agricultural engineers at Anadolu Efes have so far developed 17 registered barley seeds and seven hop varieties.

Anadolu Efes is the first brewing company in Türkiye to produce malting barley seeds and is also the most important buyer in this field in Türkiye. Continuing its activities with the aim of adding more value to the local economy and agriculture, the company also continues its efforts to increase malting barley production in Türkiye. In this context, Anadolu Efes attaches importance to the distribution of certified seeds and has increased its distribution of certified seeds by 230 per cent in the last three years. The company, which directly or indirectly provides livelihood to approximately 9 thousand farmers and their families through its agricultural activities in Türkiye, increased the number of provinces where it purchases barley from 12 to 18 this year.

The company, which has adopted the mission of working shoulder to shoulder with farmers, also provides financial support to support farmers and ensure the sustainability of malt barley production. Anadolu Efes continues to stand by farmers by increasing its ‘Farmer Incentive Package’ from TL 30 million last year to TL 93 million this year.

Anadolu Efes carries out R&D studies and technological investments to develop more drought-resistant seed varieties and increase productivity, while also collaborating with universities. It also works closely with the entrepreneurship ecosystem within the scope of sustainable agricultural practices and cooperates with start-ups that produce innovative ideas through the BrewFuture Open Innovation programme.

‘We are the most important buyer of malting barley in our country’

Onur Altürk, Beer Group President and Anadolu Efes CEO, said: ‘We contributed TL 1.3 billion to the agricultural and local economy of our country in 2024 with our projects. We are working to increase this contribution every year. In the 2024 season, we supplied barley from a total production area of 421 thousand decares, approximately 30 thousand football fields, in Southeastern Anatolia and Central Anatolia, with an increase of 20 percent compared to last year. As Anadolu Efes, we are the most important buyer of malt barley in our country. I can proudly say that in some provinces in the Southeastern Anatolia region, 2 out of 3 barley farmers are Anadolu Efes farmers. Agriculture is at the key point of our business and we act with the awareness of its importance. We are also happy to take new steps and collaborate to create more resilient and durable ecosystems in the face of the climate crisis.’

‘Tarladan Şişeye Onarımı Mayalamak’ project in the fight against the climate crisis

Anadolu Efes launched the ‘Tarladan Şişeye Onarımı Mayalamak’ project with Anadolu Meraları, a social enterprise that develops restorative systems to combat the climate crisis, creates solutions to ecological and social problems, and works to improve the soil. In the first phase of the collaboration with Anadolu Meraları, the aim is to map the current ecological, economic and social structure of the supply network and to create a restorative community infrastructure. At the same time, while carrying out capacity building activities in the existing supply network, the company aims to create a holistic perspective in line with the goal of sustainable agriculture. In this context, various analyses, especially soil analyses, will be carried out in the pilot provinces selected in the first stage, and restorative agriculture guidelines will be issued.

Yasemin Kireç, CEO of Anadolu Meraları, said: ‘We aim to establish a restorative agriculture and holistic management approach in Türkiye for a world where people learn to live in harmony with each other and with our planet. In our opinion, the starting point in our fight against the crises we are facing is soil and agriculture. We are happy to join our ways with Anadolu Efes, a company that recognises this vital task. *** With the ‘Tarladan Şişeye Onarımı Mayalamak’ programme, we aim to deepen the work Anadolu Efes is already doing with restorative agriculture, build an even more participatory ecosystem with Anadolu Efes' farmers and stakeholders, and make this ecosystem fully resilient. We are very happy to clearly see Anadolu Efes' intention to work intensively for restorative agriculture with this cooperation and to work hand in hand with them.’
